What our matching actually does.

Short version: Mentable compares what two people wrote about themselves, using rules we set by hand, and shows you the reason. There is no trained model behind it.

Matching is rule based

Our matching engine reads the fields both people filled in and looks for specific overlaps: a move one person is trying to make that the other has already made, a situation someone offered to help with, a firm one person wants to reach and the other has worked at, a subject in common.

Each kind of overlap carries a weight. We chose those weights by hand and they are written in plain sight in our source code. Nothing is learned from your data, and no model decides who you should meet.

Every suggestion comes with its reason

A recommendation you cannot interrogate is not much use. Every person we suggest comes with the sentence that explains why, and that sentence is built from the exact words the two of you wrote. If we cannot say why, we do not make the suggestion. Someone with no reason is left out rather than ranked last.

No percentages

You will not see a compatibility score anywhere in Mentable. A number like that cannot be checked, argued with, or learned from. We would rather give you a reason you can disagree with.

We do not train on your data

  • Nothing you write is used to train a model, ours or anyone else’s.
  • Profiles, messages, goals and meeting notes are not sent to any model provider.
  • Meeting notes imported from Granola are brought in by the member who took them, shown only to them until they choose to share, and never used to train anything.
  • We do not buy or sell data about you.

Mentable does not record or transcribe

Mentable does not join your meetings, record audio, or produce transcripts. If your organization has turned on meeting notes, a member who already uses Granola can bring their own notes in. We read the summary they already have. We never ask Granola for a transcript, and there is nowhere in Mentable for one to be stored.

Whether anyone may record a conversation is your organization’s decision and your organization’s responsibility. We ask an owner or admin to confirm that before the feature can be switched on.

What would change this page

We expect to use models for some things eventually, and when we do, this page will say exactly which features, what data each one sees, and how to turn them off. It will change in the same release as the feature, not after it.
